The Community Strategic Planning Process began in the spring of 2004. The City of Brandon facilitated the process by developing a community model to determine many different areas that are represented in the community. From that model, about 75 people from areas such as First Nations and Métis; health; education; government; agriculture and many more were invited to participate in the first part of the planning sessions held in September, 2004. In this first session, the participants were taken through a process that determined where Brandon had been, where it is today and where it is we as a community want to go in the future. The participants determined nine Desirable Future Statements or goals for the community to work towards. The original participants were then invited back in November, 2004 for a second session to plan for each individual statement and determine committees to work in each area. As part of managing this plan, there is currently an Implementation Committee is in existence that consists of one member from each active Desirable Future Statement steering committee. The Implementation Committee was created to keep all groups connected and up to date on each other’s progress. In addition, there exists a Leadership Committee which contains ten community volunteers who act as ambassadors for the community plan as a whole and assist the implementation teams by removing barriers and providing support as required. Committees continue with plan implementation, however it is never too late to get involved!
