Victim Services Unit – Volunteer Job description

Brandon Police Service is currently seeking qualified and interested citizens to volunteer to the Victim Services Unit to provide victims with appropriate services, information and referrals. Opportunities are available within the Victim Services Unit located at 1340 -10th Street.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide victim assistance in the areas of court updates, break & enter follow-up and emotional support as assigned;
  • Victim assistance may take the form of telephone contact, home security checks and written correspondence;
  • Seek assistance of the Unit Supervisor or staff members when problems or difficulties arise;
  • Document all victim contacts and tasks performed.

Experience and Skills:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Independent and able to work with limited supervision;
  • Sincere dedication to helping others;
  • Able to follow direction and policies at all times;
  • A mature and confident matter.

Volunteer Requirements:
  • Must be 18 years of age;
  • Must have Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status;
  • Must have no criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted;
  • Must be willing to give a one-year commitment;
  • Must be able to volunteer three to five hours per week;
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills;
  • Swear an Oath of Confidentiality and maintain the integrity of all confidential materials.
  • Report to all scheduled shifts and meetings in a punctual and professional manner;
  • Notify the Coordinator in advance if unable to attend shift;
  • Attend a minimum of 32 hours of mandatory training provided by the Victim Services Unit;
  • Complete a supervised practicum.

Supervision:
  • All volunteers will be supervised by and responsible to the Victim Services Unit;
  • Some supervision may be provided by senior volunteers with two (2) years experience;
  • Volunteers may be asked to cooperate in an annual review and assessment of the Volunteer Development Program and their overall experience volunteering with the City of Brandon.
