Community Police Unit – Volunteer Job description

Brandon Police Service is currently seeking qualified and interested citizens to volunteer to the Community Police Unit. Opportunities are available within the Community Police Station located within the Town Centre Mall.

Responsibilities:

  • Volunteers collect and update information from downtown businesses and maintain a database that includes contact information;
  • Discuss crime and safety issues with business owners and managers and work to devise solutions to these problems;
  • Assist the Crime Prevention Officer with Presentations; introduce speakers and make sure the required equipment and material is available for the presentations;
  • Assist class members with questions and distribute information as required;
  • Work with the constables from the Community Policing Unit. Their duties may include assisting with presentations; provide assistance, advice, information and education to the Citizens of Brandon;
  • Assist in the downtown office with administrative and analytical duties and the Neighborhood Watch programs;
  • Learn about the workings of a Police office while working directly with the citizens of Brandon.

Experience and Skills:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Independent and able to work with limited supervision;
  • Sincere dedication to helping others;
  • Able to follow direction and policies at all times;
  • A mature and confident matter.

Volunteer Requirements:
  • Must be 18 years of age;
  • Must have Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status;
  • Must have no criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted;
  • Must be willing to give a one-year commitment;
  • Must be able to volunteer three to five hours per week;
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills;
  • Swear an Oath of Confidentiality and maintain the integrity of all confidential materials;
  • Report to all scheduled shifts and meetings in a punctual and professional manner;
  • Notify the Coordinator in advance if unable to attend shift.

Supervision:
  • All volunteers will be supervised by and responsible to the Community Policing Unit Constables;
  • Some supervision may be provided by senior volunteers with two (2) years experience;
  • Volunteers may be asked to cooperate in an annual review and assessment of the Volunteer Development Program and their overall experience volunteering with the City of Brandon.
