How Do I...?

Graffiti Prevention

Graffiti is not just words or symbols sprayed on a wall, it is an act of vandalism that costs thousands of dollars a year to remove. If not removed immediately it sends a message that the area is uninviting and unsafe to be in. Graffiti when not removed or covered provides an opportunity for more graffiti and loitering which can lead to an increase in other crimes and acts of violence.

There are two common types of graffiti:
  • Tagging: Individuals participating in this form of graffiti refer to themselves as “taggers”. They gain fame and status from other taggers by painting distinctive “tags” in as many places as possible. This form of graffiti is usually illegible to the untrained eye and intended to be seen by other taggers.
  • Gang Graffiti: This form of graffiti is not as common as quite often only done by gang members or their associates. This form of graffiti is a method of communication that is used to promote a gang, mark their territory, recruit new members or intimidate a neighborhood.
